Several bus books published in recent months have made mention of how Covid-19 began to change services in parts of the country, but this is the first devoted to its impact on bus and coach operation. Glynne Pegg, an economist and part-time bus driver who ran his own buses in the early years of deregulation, judges that the pandemic has brought the greatest disruption to the industry since World War Two. He draws the necessary sharp distinction between its effect on bus operators, which have received financial support from the UK's governments to maintain essential services, and coach operators whose businesses have been decimated by restrictions on group travel and have qualified for little outside aid. |
