I was amazed at the timing of the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DiPTAC) seeking to put pressure on the government to strengthen the Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (PSVAR) to cover all of the for-hire sector, as reported recently in the trade press. I am all for supporting and assisting less able passengers and indeed when I was at Lancaster City Transport, our Lonsdale Coaches subsidiary adapted a coach with a chair lift. I believe it was only the second operator to do so in north/mid Lancashire. However, has DiPTAC not realised the traumas that the coach industry has suffered through Covid-19 with several operators having ceased trading while others are considering their future? When revenue for coach operators is so greatly diminished, to be proposing measures that will increase costs is neither timely nor realistic. In due course, it would be hoped that all coaches become disabled friendly, but everything has a downside. If a group of able-bodied and less mobile people travels together, the able-bodied can be disadvantaged in two ways. |
