I enjoyed reading Rhodri Clark's piece on Welsh Independents (Buses December). I have followed developments in North and Mid Wales closely as events have unfolded over the last decade. Operators of all sizes have gone through an incredibly difficult period and the turbulent times are far from over, even with BSIP funding for the lucky areas. The bus industry is lucky to have a significant number of SMEs across the UK, the vast majority of which are delivering a first-class service for their customers and enabling the provision of a much more comprehensive network. Just as the large supermarkets can be absent from smaller towns, the independents often pick up the pieces left behind, often some considerable time ago now, by the big groups or their predecessors. |
