The story of how Volvo became one of the first successful importers of coach chassis to the UK has been told before, but Howard Berry knows his subject and relates it with authority. For this latest colour picture album for Amberley, he has restricted himself to its first 40 years to 2010, when it offered a chassis with a mid-mounted horizontal engine. It begins with the two Scots who brought the Swedish giant to the UK in 1967, former road haulier Jim McKelvie and factory manager Jim Keyden. They set up Ailsa Trucks to import and sell lorries, then Ailsa Bus in 1971, a business later renamed Volvo Bus (Great Britain). |
