Bus passenger numbers in England showed a small but steady growth during June, with figures for both London and the rest of England consistently at 60-68% of normal. Some operators were reporting figures reaching 70%, although there is considerable variation depending on the type of passenger. A report to West Northamptonshire Council quoted 72% for fare-paying adults, 71% for children, but only 44% of concessionary pass holders. Smaller towns and cities are showing stronger recovery than the largest locations, with TfGM reporting that footfall in central Manchester is around 50% of the pre-pandemic average. NatEx West Midlands similarly reported that recovery in Birmingham is slower than other parts of its territory. A continuing trend is the restoration of full weekend timetables, which in some areas have remained reduced long after weekday schedules were returned to normal. In Oxford, Stagecoach reinstated night services in line with the originally-expected date of June 21 for the lifting of restrictions, as was route N94 between Cheltenham and Gloucester. Lothian started night services on its Airlink route in early June, with a full network of night buses following at the end of the month. Daytime changes included the reintroduction of express journeys on some routes at commuter times. The relaxation of on-board social distancing rules in England during May was followed by Wales on June 21, allowing all forward-facing seats to be used. Stagecoach in South Wales responded to the re-opening of the Welsh economy by adding back evening and Sunday journeys on many routes. |
