Inspired by the adventures of those who have journeyed by bus between Land's End and John o'Groats, I planned an itinerary between Ireland's two extremities. I established guidelines - the journey would be completed insofar as possible by stage carriage buses following a geographically logical route; a balance between making due progress and having time to explore and eat. Finally, travels would be without publicity - an earlier attempt wasn't accomplished. My mother, Patricia, a conductor on Cricklewood's 16 until 1982, accompanied me for most of the trip. Over 66s resident in the state are entitled to a free travel card. Individual circumstances can permit holders to bring a companion for free and mum's card is such. A weekend start was necessary; the summer Local Link (LL) to Mizen only operates on Saturdays and Sundays. The positioning journey was made on July 27, 2019, by catching a Dublin -Cork train. Whilst stopped at Thurles the adjacent Bus Eireann (BE) garage is glimpsed - only school buses are garaged here. After a wander around Cork we make for Parnell Place, spotting National Express route 890, since discontinued, leaving for London. Soon we are underway on the 16:30 to Goleen. On the edge of Ballinascarthy is a sculpture of a Ford Model T. The bus stop is at the Henry Ford Tavern; his father, William, came from the village and emigrated to Detroit, Michigan in the late-1840s. Henry, born in 1863, opened Ford's first plant outside the States in the Marina, Cork in 1919. The factory closed in 1984. Next stop Clonakilty where the West Cork Model Railway Village is a visitor attraction. The timetable indicates a change is necessary at Skibbereen, but our coach continues. The BE yard is seen on Marsh Road. Reaching Schull we head for our B & B. |
