Global construction equipment makers will be heartened to hear that the COVID-19 pandemic-ravaged construction industry in South and Southeast Asia is set to post a V-shaped recovery in 2021, according to GlobalData. The stringent lockdowns and social distancing rules due to COVID-19 have severely disrupted the construction industry across the region. Consequently, its construction industry was expected by GlobalData to contract by 8.5% in 2020. However, assuming that a widespread second wave of infections is avoided, GlobalData says output will rise sharply in 2021 because of the low-base effect, as well as the underlying potential for growth in the region given the rising middle-class population, and investment in housing and infrastructure. The slump in construction output is reflected in the unprecedented sharp contraction in the second quarter in countries such as Singapore (-59.3%), India (-50.3%), Malaysia (-44.5%) and the Philippines (-33.5%). |
