It is common knowledge that the evolution of container vessels in the last 20 years has been nothing less than phenomenal. Averaging 6,000-8,000 TEUs in 2000, the largest size vessel today is 24,000 TEU - almost triple the capacity. The recent grounding of container ship Ever Given in the Egyptian Suez Canal has once again brought to light the risks posed by these large vessels in restricted waterways, including port fairways and approach channels. With maneuverability restricted owing to deep draft and slow speed in relatively shallow waters, many ports have had to resort to deploying tugs to escort vessels throughout the port passage, causing resources to be stretched thin at times. |
