WEATHER-INDUCED CHANGES IN ROAD SAFETY AND TRAFFIC FLOW ON MOTORWAYS AND MAIN ROADS IN TOWN CENTRES |
摘要: |
THE OBJECT OF THE STUDY IS TO CLARIFY THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE DRIVER'S SENSATION OF SAFETY CORRESPONDS TO THE ACTUAL DEGREE OF SAFETY DURING WET WEATHER AND DARKNESS. THE STUDY WILL BE LIMITED TO MOTORWAYS AND MAIN ROADS IN URBAN AREAS. IF IT IS ASSUMED THAT IN TOWN CENTRES WEATHER CONDITIONS DO NOT BRING ABOUT A CHANGE IN DRIVER BEHAVIOUR, THEN ONE MUST RECKON ON A DECREASE IN SAFETY, PARTICULARLY IN WET WEATHER. THIS WOULD MEAN ACCIDENT OCCURRENCE BEING MARKEDLY AFFECTED BY WEATHER CONDITIONS. THIS QUESTION IS TO BE EXAMINED IN THE FIRST SECTION OF THE WORK BY A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF ACCIDENTS. IN THE SECOND SECTION AN ANALYSIS WILL BE MADE OF DRIVER BEHAVIOUR IN VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, AND THIS BEHAVIOUR WILL BE COMPARED WITH A STANDARD BEHAVIOUR DEFINED AS SAFE. THE OBJECT IS TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MEASURES TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF TRAFFIC IN UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS IN TOWN CENTRES. |
