摘要: BECAUSE OF SMALL DISTANCES BETWEEN JUNCTIONS AND THE PROBLEMS OF PARTIAL TWO-LEVEL FORKED JUNCTIONS, MERGING AREAS CARRYING DENSE OUTSIDE STREAMS OF TRAFFIC FREQUENTLY OCCUR BETWEEN THE ENTRANCE AND EXIT RAMPS OF URBAN MOTORWAYS. THE DESIGN OF THESE AREAS IS AN ESSENTIAL BASIS FOR THE QUALITY OF TRAFFIC FLOW WHICH CAN BE ACHIEVED. STARTING FROM A PREVIOUS STUDY OF MERGING AREAS ON MOTORWAY CLOVERLEAF JUNCTIONS, AN EXAMINATION IS TO BE MADE OF MERGING AREAS ON URBAN MOTORWAYS. USING PROVEN STUDY METHODS THE SPEED OF ALL VEHICLES ON A CROSS SECTION IS BEING DETERMINED BY MEANS OF A TIME RECORDER. LANE CHANGING, LANE OCCUPANCY AND TYPES OF VEHICLES ARE BEING ESTABLISHED IN PARALLEL WITH VIDEO CAMERAS. QUALITY FACTORS FOR DETERMINING PERMISSIBLE TRAFFIC DENSITIES IN THE MERGING AREAS OF URBAN MOTORWAYS ARE TO BE DERIVED FROM THE MEASUREMENT DATA. A SAFETY STUDY TO ASSESS RISKS INVOLVED IN LANE CHANGING AND DURING THE CROSSING OF LANES IS TO BE MADE TO PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION.
