SITUATIONAL SPEED CONTROL, IN PARTICULAR ADAPTIVE LIMITATION OF PERMISSIBLE MAXIMUM SPEED BY MEANS OF STANDARD TRAFFIC SIGNS, CAN RESULT IN THE STABILIZATION OF TRAFFIC FLOW AND A REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS IN THE WET AND IN DARKNESS. FOR THE EXPECTED USE OF FACILITIES FOR VARIABLE SPEED LIMITATION IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS, CONTROL STRATEGIES HAVE TO BE DEVELOPED IN ACCORDANCE WITH TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND SOCIAL REQUIREMENTS, AND ITERATIVELY IMPROVED DURING OPERATIONS. THEY ARE BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND RECOMMENDATIONS OBTAINED FROM EXPERIMENTS, WHICH HAVE TO BE SUPPLEMENTED BY FURTHER THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS. TOGETHER WITH THE INCREASE IN SAFETY AND THE DECREASE IN JOURNEY TIME, THE CRITERIA ARE INCREASINGLY THE REDUCTION IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION, IMPROVEMENT IN COMFORT AND REDUCTION IN COSTS. FOR THE EMPIRICAL STUDIES THE CONCEPT OF A VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL IS TO BE DEVELOPED ON A SECTION OF MOTORWAY. |
