ON A SINGLE CROSSING IN THE TOWN OF GRAZ IT IS POSSIBLE TO ACTUATE FOUR DIFFERENT SYSTEMS FOR CONTROLLING TRAFFIC. THE AIM IS TO DETERMINE WHICH SYSTEM PROVIDES THE BEST FORM OF CONTROL, AND TO SEE WHETHER THE USE OF MORE EXPENSIVE SYSTEMS CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN TERMS OF GREATER EFFICIENCY. A MEASURING METHOD IS TO BE DEVELOPED WHICH CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE THE CHARACTERISTIC VALUES USED TO EVALUATE TRAFFIC FLOW AT A SINGLE CROSSING. THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS USED IS TO BE EXAMINED AND THE OPTIMUM SYSTEM DETERMINED. THE FOLLOWING DATA ARE TO BE USED TO QUANTIFY EFFICIENCY: NUMBER OF STOPS, WAITING TIME AND QUEUE LENGTH. THE EFFICIENCY OF THE SYSTEMS IS TO BE COMPARED TO THE COSTS OF CONSTRUCTION AND/OR ADAPTATION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SIGNALS. A STUDY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS TO SHOW THE EXTENT TO WHICH PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS A BENEFICIARY OF CONTROL SYSTEMS. |
