摘要: PREVIOUSLY DAMAGE WHICH CAN BE TRACED BACK TO ALKALI REACTION IN THE CONCRETE HAS OCCURRED ON A NUMBER OF BRIDGES. IN MORE MODERN BRIDGES THE CONCRETE HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO ELIMINATE THIS DAMAGE. BRIDGES ALREADY DAMAGED HAVE TO BE PROTECTED SO THAT AS FAR AS POSSIBLE THEY LAST AS LONG AS THEY WERE INTENDED. SUITABLE PROTECTIVE AGENTS EXIST IN THE FORM OF HYDROPHOBIC COATINGS, BUT THERE IS A TIME LIMIT ON THEIR EFFECTIVENESS. THE OBJECT IS TO TEST THESE COATINGS ON SELECTED STRUCTURES WHICH HAVE VARYING ENVIRONMENTS, DEGREE OF SENSITIVITY TO ALKALI, AMOUNT OF ORIGINAL CRACKING AND TYPE OF PROTECTIVE AGENT, OVER A PERIOD OF TIME.
