THE EFFECT OF EXHAUST BACK PRESSURE ON THE COMPOSITION OF EXHAUST FUMES WAS EXAMINED ON FOUR EXHAUST SYSTEMS HAVING DIFFERENT FLOW RESISTANCES. IN EACH CASE 4 TESTS TYPE 1 ACCORDING TO PARAGRAPH 47 OF THE GERMAN HIGHWAY CODE, ANNEX 14 (EUROPEAN TEST) AND FOUR EUROPEAN TESTS WITH A WARM ENGINE WERE CONDUCTED. IN THE TYPE 1 TESTS THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE ONLY FOR THE QUANTITY OF CH EMITTED (G/TEST). ON THE OTHER HAND THE EUROPEAN TESTS CARRIED OUT WITH A WARM ENGINE SHOWED SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES NOT ONLY FOR THE QUANTITY OF CH, BUT ALSO FOR THE QUANTITIES OF CO AND NO(X) OMITTED. CONCENTRATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL EXHAUST GAS COMPONENTS UNDER CONSTANT OPERATING CONDITIONS WERE ALSO DETERMINED. ADDITIONAL MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE INDICATED THAT THE EXHAUST BACK PRESSURE AFFECT MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY. |
