THE EMISSION OF TURBULENCE FROM VEHICLES, PARTICULARLY THOSE POWERED BY DIESEL, IS TO BE MEASURED UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS. OPTICAL EQUIPMENT IS BEING USED FOR THE MEASUREMENT TO AVOID THE INACCURATE CONVERSION OF GRAVIMETRIC UNITS INTO OPTICAL UNITS. BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THE MEASUREMENTS AN IMPROVED METHOD OF CALCULATING RUST EMISSION FROM DIESEL ENGINES IS BEING WORKED OUT. THE RESEARCH IS TO BE CARRIED OUT IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH THE PIARC WORKING GROUP ON POLLUTION AND VENTILATION, THUS MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO UNDERTAKE STUDIES IN OTHER COUNTRIES. MEASUREMENTS ARE BEING UNDERTAKEN IN SEVERAL AUSTRIAN ROAD TUNNELS. THESE COMPRISE THE FOLLOWING: VEHICLE FREQUENCY (SEPARATED ACCORDING TO CAR AND LORRY), SPEED, QUANTITY OF FRESH AIR BLOWN IN, TURBULENCE IN THE TUNNEL, CO CONCENTRATION. A MEASURING TRAILER IS BEING BUILT WHICH CAN BE USED TO DETERMINE THE FOLLOWING: SPEED, EXHAUST GAS TURBULENCE AND EXHAUST GAS VOLUMES. THE TRAILER IS DESIGNED SO THAT IT CAN QUICKLY BE LINKED TO ANY LORRY. IT IS THUS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A RAPID TEST OF TURBULENCE EMISSION WHEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF LORRIES TRAVEL THROUGH TUNNELS. MEASUREMENTS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE ON ANY OPEN SECTION OF ROAD. |
