摘要: The maritime industry is more than business. It's family. And that family lost a dear member December 8 with the passing of William "Bill" Stuart Grantham, who died at age 71 due to complications from COVID-19. Grantham was born in Mobile, Ala., but he grew up and spent most of his life in Baton Rouge, La. Grantham made his mark on the south Louisiana maritime industry through his businesses, Capital Fleet and Acadian Marine Transportation, both based in Baton Rouge, and through his work with the Greater New Orleans Barge Fleeting Association. Grantham's brother, Lee, first introduced him to the industry in the early 1970s. At that time, Lee was a night dispatcher for Capital Marine Supply, which was then part of Midland Enterprises. "Whenever my brother, Lee, went to med school, he got Bill to come on and take his place," another brother, Tommy said. "He started in 1972. From there, he worked his way up into operations and management with Midland." By the mid-1980s, Grantham left Midland to start a brokerage company called Acadian Marine Transportation. Still, he maintained contact with Midland. Then, in 1988, when Midland bought Federal Barge Line and moved its operations from the Capital Marine Supply location downriver to Triangle Fleet, Midland leaders still wanted to maintain a presence in Baton Rouge.
