In July 2011, the EJ&E Railroad bridge on the upper Illinois River at Mile 270 was finally replaced. This bridge had the distinction of being the most-hit bridge in the United States. For those mariners who navigated the original bridge, which was built in 1895, the new bridge with a much wider draw was a welcome event. The Illinois River Carriers Association spent almost 10 years obtaining funding for the replacement bridge that cost $43 million. The EJ&E replacement bridge qualified as one of President Obama's "shovel ready" projects. The photograph shows the piers and protection cells of the old bridge under the new bridge and within the new wider draw. It took until the end of 2011 for the old piers and cells to be removed and dredging completed to provide a clear channel without any tow width restrictions. |
