Transportation Research Synthesis: Ultra-Thin Bonded Wearing Course (UTBWC) Snow, Ice, and Wind Effects, Phase 2
摘要:
Ultra-thin bonded wearing course (UTBWC) pavement treatment was introduced to Minnesota in 1999. This technique can be used as a preventive maintenance option or surface rehabilitation technique. It appears to provide an economical choice for pavements in need of minor rehabilitation. There have been observations that UTBWC is causing ice build-up in the wheel paths (note: this hasn't been observed on all UTBWC sections). The objective of this project is to better understand the correct applications for UTBWC and the adverse effects weather and maintenance have on it. In Phase 2, field information related to the winter maintenance efforts and costs on UTBWC pavements will be gathered and compared to the standard hot mix asphalt pavements. Also, the bonded dense graded test sections which were constructed in 2017 will be supplemented with additional test sections.
This project will: research the effects of snow and ice and wind on UTBWC applications, particularly the severity/speed of wind and the wind direction relative to the road; research the effect of the typical section on the snow and ice performance; develop solutions for the proper placement of UTBWC considering all climatological, traffic and pavement related factors; study impact of maintenance operations on UTBWC; provide implement guidance / policies for use of UTBWC.
