The objective of this study is the development of a recommended practice (RP) for external based leak detection on natural gas transmission lines. The developed RP will build on existing RPs and industry guidelines for hazardous liquid and gas pipelines. The RP will increase the safe operation of the U.S. natural gas transmission pipeline network by standardizing practices across operators and increasing the likelihood a leak is found before becoming a safety hazard.
The work will be conducted in three phases: (1) information gathering and technology assessment; (2) establish standardized sensor specifications and testing practices; and (3) develop guidelines for a central technology certification organization and the full RP. The final project deliverable will be a publicly available RP that includes at a minimum: descriptions of various leak detection programs, criteria for selecting leak detection methods, instrument detection specifications, guidelines for a technology certification organization, and metrics for measuring effectiveness.
Through extensive interaction with utilities, vendors, and the technical advisory panel, Gas Technology Institute (GTI) will combine existing data into a current recommended practice that can be adapted to new technologies and methodologies. |
