In order to complete the proper documentation of the levels of sustainability achieved with MnDOT construction projects, we must first understand the environmental characterizations of the materials we choose. The ready-mix concrete industry, the asphalt paving industry, and concrete paving industry have invested in developing Product Category Rules (PCRs). A PCR is a peer-reviewed process for documenting the various environmental impacts of a product. Proper implementation of a PCR yields an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). An EPD is analogous to a nutrition label on food products. Energy and water used as well as emissions created are documented. The industries now have the ability to calculate cradle-to-grave EPDs for every mix design produced at a given plant.
The competitive nature of these industries suggests that it is in our own best interest to become well versed on this topic. It it likely to become the fundamental building block of cradle-to-grave environmental analysis which would include installation, use, and end-of-life (recycling) considerations. |
