Protected Intersection Design for Safer Cycling
项目名称: Protected Intersection Design for Safer Cycling
摘要: Cyclist deaths due to traffic crashes have increased in the last year while the number of injuries has decreased. One of the infrastructure designs that have been recommended for this is the protected intersection design (also known as the Dutch intersection due to its popularity in the Netherlands) that continues the separation offered by protected bike lanes through the intersection. The objective of this project is to investigate the impact of protected intersections and their geometric features, in particular, the size and location of the refuge corner island relative to the bike lane, as well as vehicle and bicycle demand on driver behavior using driving simulation. This research will provide insights on how protected intersections should be designed given the available space at a certain location, informing engineers on the best utilization of space that improve cyclist safety.
