The principal objectives of phase I of this project are to first validate/calibrate existing fly ash compositional equations that predict properties of concrete materials for pavements and then extend and/or develop new characterization protocols for high SCM replacement rates of cement (fly ash and slag) available in the State of Illinois. The goal is to have simple characterization and testing protocols that will allow the use of high volume SCMs in concrete pavement without compromising workability, air content, initial setting time, early strength gain, long term mechanical properties, and durability. Phase II objectives will be focused on using the compositional characterization protocols to predict the fresh and mechanical properties and durability performance for concrete containing high SCMs applied to pavements. |
