According to engineers at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), as many as 1000 bridges in Oklahoma may have been designed using the quarter point rule for shear, potentially leaving these bridges vulnerable to a lower load rating. Long-term exposure to the often harsh climate of Oklahoma can cause deterioration of the mechanical properties and structural behavior of the girders.
Overall objective: The objectives of the proposed research are intended to extend the results of previous research sponsored by ODOT (related to shear in pre-stressed concrete bridge girders and evaluation of deterioration in in-service bridges) in order to create useful tools for providing accurate ratings of older bridges.
Background: Over the last decade, the Primary Investigators have conducted a substantial quantity of research (sponsored by ODOT) related to shear behavior and evaluating condition of pre-stressed concrete bridge girders. This information can be used to create a procedure for more accurately rating bridges for shear, specifically bridges designed according to older versions of the AASHTO Specifications.
The research team will improve and develop procedures for two field tests to determine material properties, effective pre-stress, and the extent of end region damage into a form more directly usable by ODOT.
Work tasks include:
1. Identify Design Items of Interest
2. Methods for Assessing Condition of Aged Girders
3. Inspection Data Interpretation
4. Rating Tool Development
5. Training
6. Writing of Reports
Anticipated Benefits: This project will allow ODOT engineers to evaluate the capacity of given bridge based on a combination of code methods, recent experimental test data, and other information relevant for bridge rating (such as material property predictions based on field measurements). In addition to providing procedures for rating bridges subject to shear vulnerability, the project will further advance methods of obtaining important performance parameters and properties of existing bridges for use in bridge evaluation.
Implementation: This project would synthesize and use information from previous projects sponsored by ODOT to produce a tool that can be easily implemented. ODOT can use the results of this project to inform decisions regarding capacity and status of a large number of bridges within the state that were designed using previous versions of the AASHTO Specifications with their shear capacities in question.
Expected Deliverables: The project will produce the ODOT standard monthly progress reports, year-end progress report, and final report in Microsoft Word and ADA accessible Adobe Acrobat pdf. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets containing the programs making up the rating tool will be provided. In addition, materials used for training ODOT personnel in using the rating tool will be provided to ODOT for future internal use.
Time Schedule: Two years. |
