2281 - Evaluating the Performance of Existing Reinforcement for Oklahoma Bridges
项目名称: 2281 - Evaluating the Performance of Existing Reinforcement for Oklahoma Bridges
摘要: Use of deicing salts in the United States over the past 65 years has resulted in the steady deterioration of roadway bridge decks due the corrosion of reinforcing steel. The annual cost of this corrosion damage was estimated at $13.6 billion in 2012 (NACE 2012). Additional research comparing the cost-effectiveness of alternative corrosion-resistant systems relative to epoxy-coated reinforcement is needed. Providing guidelines in the form of quick reference tables will allow staff to select the appropriate corrosion protection system for the structure type and exposure conditions. Objectives: Obtain epoxy-coated reinforcing steel from deck panels (taken from two bridges) for visual and laboratory evaluations. Use accelerated laboratory test procedures to evaluate the corrosion performance of epoxy-coated, galvanized, and ChrōmX reinforcement. Perform 100-year life cycle cost analyses for the reinforcement under study and compare those results with costs associated with conventional reinforcement for bridges in Oklahoma. Background: Decades of previous research have made clear that corrosion is an ever-increasingly expensive problem facing our nations infrastructure. Epoxy-coated reinforcement limits access of oxygen, water, and chlorides, providing protection to the underlying steel. Metallic coatings of different types have been used for many years to protect steel from corrosion. Work Plan: 1. Perform a literature search. 2. Perform visual and laboratory evaluation of the existing epoxy-coated reinforcing steel from the deck panels taken from the I-35 bridge over Cow Creek and the adjacent control bridge which used black steel. Perform visual observations of the performance of the ChrōmX (MMFX) rebar on the Northbound I-35 Bridge over the Chickaskia River. 3. Perform accelerated lab testing on epoxy-coated, ChrōmX (MMFX), galvanized, and conventional black reinforcing steel. Test for effects of UV damage. 4. Perform 100-year life cycle cost analysis for bridge decks in Oklahoma containing epoxy-coated, ChrōmX, galvanized, and mild steel. 5. Prepare research deliverables and implement research results. Anticipated Benefits: Establish the life cycle cost for bridges containing the different corrosion protection systems based on a 100-year economic life. Provide an easy-to-use, evidence-based tool allowing ODOT and consulting engineers to choose the most effective salt-exposure for bridge type. Implementation: This study has two overriding goals: 1) establish the relative performance and cost-effectiveness of epoxy-coated, ChrōmX, and galvanized reinforcement in bridges in Oklahoma and 2) translate that information into easy-to-use guidelines for the design, construction, and maintenance of reinforced concrete infrastructure. Expected Deliverables: Project deliverables will include monthly progress reports and two year-end annual reports. The draft final report will be provided in Microsoft Word and ADA accessible Adobe Acrobat pdf electronic formats to the ODOT project monitors. Time Schedule: 30 months
