The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has periodically conducted a survey of driving-age individuals on their attitudes and self-reported behavior in regards to drinking and driving. The National Survey on Drinking and Driving Attitudes and Behaviors was conducted eight times, the first in 1991 and the last in 2008. The survey data helps track national trends in the drinking-driving problem and assess efforts to reduce impaired driving. This project is a continuation of the National Survey, but it will add items on drugs other than alcohol. The key objectives are to assess awareness of and opinions about laws on impaired driving; collect data on the use of alcohol and, for the first time in this series, drugs (other than alcohol), and driving; and gain information that can inform the development of countermeasures to improve driving safety and assist in evaluating the progress of safety programs and countermeasures. Survey respondents will have the option to take the questionnaire on-line or on paper (delivered by U.S. mail). The intention is to obtain updated, nationally representative data on behaviors and attitudes towards alcohol and drug use and driving. |
