This project will develop and deploy of a limited set of prototype on board equipment (OBEs) in the District of Columbia. The project will also evaluate the current infrastructure and advise District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) on the necessary steps for preparing their current infrastructure for the deployment of connected vehicle (CV) systems.
The proposed on-board equipment will interface with the vehicle's OBDII port for vehicle operation details, a smartphone for pothole detection capability and system access, a dedicated short range communication (DSRC) transponder, and external weather sensors to detect roadway temperatures. Monitoring software will provide situational awareness and the ability to post TIM messages. The driver will be able to report conditions to the monitoring software via text-to-speech as well.
DDOT will be piloting this technology on 5 Roadway Operations Patrol vehicles. |
