The proposed project is both a feasibility study to identify sensor technologies that hold high promise for improving Bridge Weight in Motion (BWIM) system performance through data enrichment (eBWIM), as well as a planning study to formulate a long-range plan for establishing a testbed (e.g. Figure 3) to investigate eBWIM data processing techniques, validation and calibration. The feasibility study will be a critical evaluation of all viable sensor and imaging technologies and corresponding data processing techniques. The planning study will identify potential bridges in the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area which have traffic sensors and which can be easily fitted with a BWIM system. This task will include careful coordination with bridge owners (e.g., Minnesota Department of Transportation, cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the University) to facilitate access to bridges and sensor data. The detailed plan would also including detailed specification of the hardware and software that would be needed for the testbed to enable the deployment of an eBWIM system. The planning stage would conclude with identification of funding sources to fund the research program. |
