Even though transportation infrastructure is crucial to the economy,
transport of food and goods, and basically every aspect of our daily lives,
is a staggering source of material and energy consumption and creation
of pollutions and unwanted emissions. The first step for managing the
environmental impacts of such a system is to quantify them. This
research aims at addressing the gaps in the knowledge in this area by
developing regionally-representative and up-to-date models for
quantifying the environmental impacts of various decisions in managing
the transportation infrastructure, both at project and network level.
Furthermore, this research will address issues and concerns facing local
roads, which are of a different nature than what federal and state roads
are facing, local governments need novel solutions specific to their
challenges, and tools for determining the cost and environmental impacts
of such solutions. |
