The project aims to evaluate a biodegradable additive to salt for deicing. Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of that salt not freezes into solid ice but to "slush". It affects coatings such that frost damage of stones in the coating is minimized. Results from other European countries show that the effect is significant. Experiments carried out in Sweden is rather limited, but has shown a 50 percent reduction of stone release. Our hope with this more extensive study is to show that corrective maintenance, in the maintenance areas that use the additive, gets lower cost for pothole repair, repairing cracks, etc. If this study is correct, every invested SEK in the project is to give 2-3 SEK back. Each area uses about 20 million SEK for summer maintenance, 6-7 million of these are coating maintenance. If about 50 percent less stone drop occurs, the repair rate should be lower than in reference areas. The additive has a positive impact on the environment and is biodegradable. As well additive as the equipment for mixing it with salt and evaluation report is included in the study. |
