Friction factor is a function of many variables including type of surface, condition of the surface on which the vehicle travels, speed of the vehicle and condition of tires. The value of friction factor generally has a wide range. It ranges from 0.05 to 0.90 representing the most traveled conditions. Friction factor is a function of square of the vehicle speed. Larger the friction factor larger the vehicle speed. When a vehicle speeds around 70 mph a change in the input of friction factor from 0.8 (right value) to 0.25 (wrong value) generates an error of 44%in the calculated vehicle speed. In the following pages a problem representing some real life conditions along with right and wrong solutions is given. Friction factor has a strong influence on the calculated vehicle speed when it begins skidding. Therefore assigning a wrong friction factor leads to erroneous vehicles speeds. Therefore care must be taken to assign the right friction factor representing the existing conditions at the time and place of accident respecting the professional engineering and accident reconstruction engineering principles. |
