Sight distance is the length of roadway ahead visible to the vehicle operator. Sufficient sight distances are always needed for operating motor vehicles safely and efficiently. Sufficient sight distance allows the driver enough distance and time to control the vehicle for avoiding accidents with other vehicles and objects. Sight distance is directly related to and varies appreciably with design speed. Sight distance also depends on whether the location is on a rural or urban road and on the type of avoidance maneuver required by the driver to negotiate the location properly. To determine the sufficient sight distances AASHTO developed criteria that are applicable to most situations. These criteria are based on empirical data. |
