ITE JOURNAL: You've been working in the connected vehicle space for a long time. How have you seen the industry evolve in terms of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs)? What have been some of the sticking points to realization, and what do you see as new opportunities in the space?SMITH: Connected vehicle technology has advanced greatly over the last decade-from a research effort with prototype equipment development and only a handful of involved transportation agencies to a widespread endeavor with deployments and pilots across the country. While this technology is promising, its development has been limited by regulatory issues, evolving technology, and expectations of perfection. Safety-critical technology applications must be completely reliable, but while waiting for the technology to incrementally mature, we continue to lose 40,000 people a year on our roads. Vehicles coming off the assembly line with embedded connected vehicle technology were expected years ago, but because of these barriers and challenges, we continue to wait. However, the promise of this technology is still very much worth pursuing. |
