摘要: Horizontal curves are a significant contributing factor to motorcycle crash risks. Texas Motorcycle Crash Facts indicates that motorcyclists experience fatal and severe crashes eight times more than non-motorcyclists on curves and two times more than motorcyclists on straight segments.1 The motorcycle safety issue is more severe on rural two-lane curves due to relatively high speed and relatively low safety characteristics on these facilities (for example., narrow lane width and shoulder width, no physical separators on medians, absence of street lighting, etc.).2 A Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) naturalistic study suggests that excess entry speed combined with inattention and poor negotiation skills contribute significantly to cornering mishaps for motorcyclists on horizontal curves.3 Thus, speed control and increasing perception of potential risks are effective ways to prevent motorcycle crashes and injuries on horizontal curves.
