Freeway interchange ramps are common horizontal curves that experience a significantly high number of crashes per lane miles compared to any other roadway segment. These ramps often include horizontal curves due to right-of-way constraints and other factors that require a significant reduction in speed to be safely negotiated. Drivers often fail to reduce their speed while transi-tioning from a high-speed freeway environment to the lower speed requirements of the ramp, leading to a crash. Nationwide, a total of 779 fatal crashes occurred on the freeway exit and entrance ramps in 2019.1 Most of the crashes on ramps are single-vehicle lane departure crashes where speeding-more specifically, transitioning from a higher speed to a lower speed-is a contributing factor. Therefore it is highly important to implement safety measures on freeway exit ramps that will help drivers to reduce speed and eventually improve safety. |
