In France, advertisements for cars must now encourage potential buyers to walk or bike instead, the Associated Press reports. Starting in March, French car ads will have to mention one of three messages, or face a fine-"For short trips, prefer walking or cycling," "Think about carpooling," or, "On a daily basis, take public transport." The move by the French government is aimed at reducing the nations carbon emissions, of which the transport section is responsible for more than 30 percent. According to a decree published in January, the new regulation applies to television, radio, newspaper, billboard, and online ads, and companies will face a fine of up to 50,000 euros ($56,652) per run if they don't comply. |
