In June, Weeks Marine, Inc., one of the largest marine, dredging and tunneling contractors in North America, completed dredging work on the isle of West Grand Terre as part of a massive Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) project to restore 256 ac. of beaches, dunes and back barrier marshland. By pumping almost 5,749,000 yd~3 of dredged sediment from the Gulf of Mexico, Weeks helped raise the beach elevation by four ft, in some places reaching eight ft above sea level. With the dredging work complete, more restoration work including placing armor stones and vegetation can occur to finish the project."Barrier islands like West Grand Terre are the area's first defense against storm surges and coastal flooding brought on by active hurricane seasons," said Jon Crockett, Project Manager at Weeks Marine overseeing dredging on West Grand Terre. "Once completely finished, the restored land will provide storm surge and wave attenuation, reducing risk to infrastructure while providing restored habitats for native species." |
