This is the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) developed under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA). The STIP shows how the funds will be used to accomplish our state's transportation needs for Fiscal Years 1996 through 1998. The program was developed through coordinated efforts of the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), state and federal agencies, local and tribal governments, metropolitan planning organizations, public agencies, transportation providers, citizens and other interested parties. This program identifies highway, rail, aeronautic and transit improvements to preserve, renovate and enhance Montana's transportation system. The program lists improvements on more than 1300 miles of road over the next three years using in excess of $580 million in state and federal construction funds. As much as we would like to be able to foresee the future, we use this program as a planning guide and not as a binding commitment to deliver the projects exactly as described. This program is subject to revisions and changes which may be required by unforn seen situations as right-of-way acquisitions and utility relocations delays, complex environmental issues or funding availability. We pledge to do our best to adhere to this program and to serve the public interest through these projects because we value their input, advice and support of our efforts. The Department will continue to work hard to provide better and safer transportation for Montana's citizen and everyone who travels through our state. |
