ITE began a stronger focus on rural ITS activities beginning in 2017 with an agreement with the U.S. Department ofTransportation's (USDOT) ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) to provide operational, administrative, and technical support for the Rural ITS annual conference and associated Steering Committee. The National Rural ITS Steering Committee represents a cross section of representatives from public agencies, private sector, research organizations, and professional associations. Through this work, ITE supports the ITS-JPO's Rural ITS program goals to identify and select ITS initiatives created in response to the transportation challenges and deployment needs in rural areas; share noteworthy practices from successful implementation in rural, small community, and multistate environments; and share the value to rural areas of these ITS technology solutions. Rural ITS provides technology-enabled assets and applications for real-time monitoring and information exchange on roads across sparsely populated areas that provide safety, emergency services, inter-urban connection, and economic support. The two-fold significance of rural ITS concerns goods movement and the economy coupled with safety, mobility, and accessibility to goods and services across rural regions benefitting both the population and visitors served. From the inception of the first National Rural ITS Conference convened in Redding, CA, USA in 1992, the Steering Committee has been focused on its purpose of sharing knowledge and experience on connecting rural and small communities using transportation technologies. ITE has assisted the Steering Committee by helping expand their effort beyond a conference planning committee to include a strategic plan and work plan that has included white papers, webinars, and outreach to interested parties. |
