CO_2, OR CARBON dioxide, is at the heart of the climate crisis. Along with methane and nitrogen oxide, it is one of the main gases responsible for the greenhouse effect that dangerously traps the sun's heat and raises our planet's temperatures. In an attempt to reverse this effect, the first binding global climate agreement, the Paris Agreement, was signed in December 2015. The agreement will go down in history for its recognition of the crisis, but also because of the strong opposition expressed by different countries. This is despite the increasingly clear climate risks posed by the crisis: rising temperatures, reduced average annual rainfall, more extreme weather events, reduced water availability, more fires, desertification, rising sea levels and the increasing frequency of heat waves, among many other impacts, including air pollution-related mortality. |
