Under the Federal Aviation Administration Airworthiness Assurance Center of Excellence and the Aircraft Catastrophic Failure Prevention Program, the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) teamed with The Boeing Company to investigate lightweight ballistic protection of commercial aircraft from engine fragments. UCBs role was to perform small-scale impact tests of barriers made from single and multilayer Zylon fabric to assess different fabric shield concepts prior to full-scale aircraft fuselage demonstration. It should be noted that at the time of this study, Zylon fabric was found to have long-term environmental deterioration issues. However, for the purpose of this study, Zylon was used to leverage previous testing and analysis on this fabric. This report describes the test results, including the energy absorbed and postimpact condition of the fabric barriers. / NOTE: Final rept. / Supplementary Notes: Sponsored by Federal Aviation Administration, Washington, DC.
