CTS received an appropriation in 2007 from the Minnesota Legislature to assess public policy and technology options for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector in Minnesota. To address the interdisciplinary issues raised by this study, CTS assembled and led a research team drawn from multiple fields including mechanical engineering, public policy, and civil engineering. The team found that the transportation sector can meet its share of the states goals for reducing GHG emissions in 2015 and can possibly exceed them in 2025 but action must start now. According to the final report, meeting the goals will require a combination of strategies targeted to reduce fuel consumption, vehicle-miles traveled, and fuel carbon content. |
