It should not be news that the transportation and urban design professions have a long history of implementing and perpetuating racist programs and policies. Redlining, white flight, urban renewal, destructive highway policies, and the combined forces of displacement and disinvestment have left a legacy of poverty, isolation, and distrust within many Black communities and communities of color across the United States. Vulnerable populations— from individual roadway users to fully disenfranchised communities-have been treated as collateral damage in the name of progress. |
