Before you can build a fiber optic network, you need to know what to make and how to build it, which I admit sounds altogether too obvious. At least, it was to us in the early days of the Fiber Optic Association (FOA). So, we prioritized documenting the design process and eventually created a Fiber Optic Network Design certification. A group of FOA technical advisors, all experienced fiber techs and trainers, was given that task. As we began documenting the design process, we found many variations in what people considered design. Some thought of blueprints. Others thought about CAD systems. Others focused on the installation process. But some more experienced people said no, let's start at the beginning. Before we start designing the cable plant, it is necessary to define the communications network it will create. What are the communications needs that this fiber optic network will satisfy? Where are the endpoints it will connect and intermediate drops? How long are all the links? How much traffic will it need to carry? |
