Because of all the billions of dollars promised for building broadband, over the last year, I have talked with numerous state broadband groups and their public and private partners about fiber optics. I've answered so many questions about how fiber optic networks work that I authored another FOA book, The Fiber Optic Association Guide To Fiber Broadband, to answer many of those questions. I guess that was a good idea - the book became an Amazon tech bestseller. On the other hand, listening to those state broadband agency people and their local contacts made me aware of something that needs more discussion. Many project decisions are made using outdated knowledge and opinions, not after an organized survey of the current and future needs and technology. In several cases, I saw what I started calling "the bucket truck syndrome." When the groups began discussing building networks, the discussion centered on aerial cable plants. If you talked about training a workforce, it was all about training workers how to use bucket trucks to install aerial cables. |
