Max Sugarman has only been in post for six months but is moving at quite a pace. Polls have been taken, working groups set up, surveys released, areas of focus have been set down and strategies are in development. He is now clear about his foundations, is in the process of building a platform and is gearing up to speak from it: 'We are where transport and technology meet and this is what ITS fundamentally is. In terms of what it can do, I see five core things: safety, carbon, cost, capacity, and growth.' Following an early poll of members to understand the latest priorities, he tells Highways the results showed that he has inherited an effective organisation with high satisfaction levels but one that is also eager for more influence. 'There were really good satisfaction scores with the organisation so that was really positive, but the one thing they said they would like us to do more of is advocacy and thought leadership. That is high on my priority list. We are going to move to a position now where we act as the voice of the sector - and we go out to meet with politicians and policymakers and talk to them about what ITS involves. We recently set up an advocacy and public affairs group and we are developing our key thoughts on how we can make the transport system better. It is about making sure our argument is being heard,' Mr Sugarman says. |
