In late September, just before the Conservative Party Conference, the Department for Transport (DfT) launched its Plan for Drivers, billed by the prime minister as 'slamming the brakes on anti-car measures' and by the department as a 'new long-term plan to back drivers'. PM Rishi Sunak said on X (formerly Twitter): 'Most of us use a car every day and, for many, life would be difficult without their car. But too often, drivers feel under attack. That changes today with a long-term plan to improve drivers' experience on the road.' That same week, the ADEPT National Traffic Managers Conference focused on the theme of preparing, delivering and managing resilient road networks. Ann Carruthers, chair of the organisation's Transport and Connectivity Board and next in line to be its president, observed that the timing of the event could not have been better. Perhaps this is why roads minister Richard Holden delivered the keynote address, albeit by video link. He assured traffic managers that the work that they do 'has never been higher up the political agenda'. |
