Major changes to the Highway Code came into force on 29 January, introducing a road user hierarchy with those most at risk in the event of a collision placed at the top.The new code states this does not detract from the responsibility of all road users to have regard for their own and others' safety, but it does give cyclists more priority and protection. The updated code clarifies that:1. when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way2. if people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way3. people driving, riding a motorcycle or cycling must gjve way to people on a zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing. There is also updated guidance on safe passing distances and speeds when overtaking vulnerable road users, including leaving at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) when overtaking cyclist at speeds up to 30mph, and giving them even more space when overtaking at higher speeds. There are also new rules about behaviour at junctions and roundabouts, including clarifying that when cyclists are going straight ahead at a junction, they have priority over traffic waiting to turn into or out of a side road, unless road signs or markings indicate otherwise. |
