Technology has been used for more than two decades to assist the police in identifying motorists who break the speed limit, but spotting other forms of dangerous driving has been more difficult to do. While speeding is undoubtedly a significant cause of collisions on the network, distracted driving, particularly the use of a mobile phone, is also a growing problem on our roads; you cannot spend much time travelling without noticing a swerving driver gazing down at their device. Department for Transport data suggests that 1% of drivers are holding a mobile phone, either to their ear or in their hand, at any one instant. However, this is likely to be a conservative estimate if looking at an entire journey. It is a serious issue and actually more dangerous than some other, less 'socially acceptable', offences. The road safety charity, Brake, found that those using their phones while driving were four times more likely to be in an incident and twice as likely to crash compared to drink driving. |
