The local transport and highways data market is currently too fragmented and patchy for the private sector to really make hay. However, its inherent value has been demonstrated: Transport for London (TfL) generates an estimated annual economic benefit of up to £130m a year through open data. Norfolk CC is committed to tackling climate change and has a target of achieving net zero on its estates by 2030. The push for sustainable and active transport has gained significant momentum across the globe over the past few years, with research showing that active transport can make a significant impact on carbon emissions. Our transport plan, therefore, focuses on sustainable travel and different types of active transport, to allow people to access goods, services, facilities, education and work. In 2020, we launched our 'Decarbonising Norwich through micromobility' project, after securing £700,000 from the Department for Transport's (DfT) Transforming Cities Fund. This groundbreaking scheme, run with our partner Beryl, is a micromobility service offering pedal bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters. We were the first in the country to offer a multi-modal service through a single operator. Norwich has a historic medieval city centre, with narrow road spaces, and is in high demand from different types of transport users with different agendas. The project aims to transform urban mobility and reduce carbon emissions, providing people with a range of different transport options. |
