Print deadlines being what they are, I am writing this on a morning when the sun is already beating down out of a cloudless blue sky. Yes, of course, it is the first day of the school term, so why wouldn't the weather perk up after a summer characterised by grey, windy, waterlogged days, despite the Met Office telling us how lovely and above averagely warm it has been? By the time you read, this we'll know whether today's Met Office prognosis for the week ahead held true: 'Many places can expect to see maximum temperatures rise to 25℃ or above for several days, which would bring some locations into the realm of heatwave conditions.' This does not bode well for highways. Meantime, the commencement of the autumn term has brought with it some of the most concerning structural engineering problems for the public realm that I can recall, with the RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) issue leading to the closure of schools, nurseries and other buildings. The coming weeks will undoubtedly result in both heat and, I hope, some light being shed on the issue as the focus turns away from identifying, which schools are closed and onto what's to be done now and, of course, how we found ourselves here in the first place. |
